Goodbye Doesn't Mean I'm Stoned in the Nucleus of the Great White Emptiness

HAHA LOOK AT THAT A PLAY ON ALL FOUR ALBUM TITLES.  Let's face it, that was pretty fucking gay and gimmicky.  Here at Desolation Unknown we pride ourselves in horrible ways to get you to read this blog.  Offering horribly biased reviews, shitty grammar, and horrible puns.  That being said, this blog will be getting a major fucking overhaul within the next few months.  I mean it, not like this messageboard *cough*lambgoat*cough* where changes are promised all the fucking time.  We will actually go through with the changes.

Look for the following:

Unbiased reviews
Less bullshit and more blunt descriptions
More general disgust for the state of music
More albums for you to bang your head, air guitar, air drum, or masturbate too, whichever it is that you do

On ward (to Valhalla) with the newest additions to this blog, and there are four of them.

Ahh, yes, doom. Quite frankly, I think this genre is pretty dull.  There are a few bands here and there that do draw my attention, but if I'm going to listen to music that progresses chords every eighty minutes, I'll go and watch a fucking plant grow (yes, I just stereotyped this genre...I don't care.  Not too big of a fan of this stuff).  This being said, I do enjoy the shit out of Acid Witch.  The first album was awesome, albeit the drums were underproduced.  The riffs on Witchtanic Hellucinations were heavy and Black Sabbathy.  Much has changed on the new one, and it's for the better.  A different vocalist and a more death and roll approach to the new one, offer up some super awesome leads and super awesome heavy riffs.  The drums are much tighter and the organ offers up some crazy riff variations.  After a few listens, this may be a front runner for album of the year.  So many catchy riffs.  Check out the songs Trick or Treat, Stoned to the Grave, Live Forever, and Metal Movie Marijuana Massacre.

I love bands that incorporate different genres into their style and I love bands that are influenced by opposite sides of the spectrum of heavy/extreme/metal music.  I can honestly say that Dawnbringer offer a much needed change of pace in my listening rotation.  I would like to give Poonangular a shoutout for recommending this band to me.  Check out his blog POONANGULAR.  Anyways, they mix sort of Iron Maiden/NWOBHM with elements of doom (slower riffing) and black metal metal (tremolo picking).  Metal Archives just calls them Heavy Metal.  I think that's a better and much fairer assumption.  This band features former Nachtmystium members.  Just check out Nucleus, pretty good record for 2010.

Another change of pace is the new Scarlet Youth.  After hearing this band last year, I fell in love with the shoegaze and dreampop genres.  After one listen to the new one, I can't really state how bad/good it is compared to their last effort (which was damn near perfect, in my opinion).  Breaking the Patterns was a phenomenal six track EP.  One listen into the new one, I hear a bit of a Silversun Pickups influence, which isn't bad, but it just distracts from their dreamy/atmospheric sound.  The melodies are there, but something just doesn't hold up as well as the EP.  Maybe, if I split this album into two 5 song albums on my own time, I can grow to appreciate it a bit more.  I like what I've heard, and I honestly need to give it another few spins to be fair.  It's not bad...It's my high expectations that may have me thinking mediocrity on this one.

My love for shoegaze and black metal lead me to this next album.  I love atmospheric black metal, but when shoegaze, post-rock, and heavy ambiance is added, I can't help but give bands a try.  I actually found this album last night, listened to it while laying in bed and was just captivated.  The atmosphere this band creates is just bleak.  It sometimes just feels hopeless.  I really like vocalists who have that high pitched shriek, and the guy that does this music has a perfect voice for this style.  It's hopeless.  I've listened to the album a few times and I can't get enough of it.  I am stoked to put this one on my iPod for work and travel.  I can see this album being an under the radar album that sneaks into the top 3.  Check them out.  Cold Body Radiation.

So far, 2010 has yielded many great albums.  Specifically, this year has opened me up to more black metal than I could have ever imagined listening to.  Look for a complete breakdown of the best and worst of 2010 within the next few months.  I'm going to try and update bit more here and there.  Enjoy.
